Robert Parker 100
A remarkable effort by the Rothschild family: the 2009 Gospel could well become, for decades to come, the reference cuvée of the property. A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, aged in 100% new wood and containing 15% natural alcohol, it reveals a sumptuous bouquet of caramel, black raspberry liqueur, blackberry, violet, graphite and truffle.
Dense, unctuous flavours are reminiscent of ultra-ripe vintages such as 1982, 1959, 1949 and 1947.
The striking aromas, the massive and broad palate, and the palette of flavours in layers - like a skyscraper in the mouth - offer a relentless lesson in great winemaking art, exceptional terroir and the ability to combine power, precision, elegance and freshness.
It is undeniably a colossal wine, but it also has an astonishing complexity and finesse. Thanks to its concentration and velvety feel, it will be able to keep for four decades.
